Commissions for Hotels and Homes

BarriemoreSm.JPG (48449 bytes)

This view of Oban was done for the Barriemore Hotel, Oban, and was completed in May 2003.

The view is from the south pier, and shows the iconic McCaig's Tower at the top.  This tower is the logo used by the hotel, which was also built by McCaig.

Below the tower lies a street of houses, linked to the main street below by a winding pathway known as "Jacob' Ladder".  This is a "cut out" area of the window, with a 3-D ladder of wire and solder representing and highlighting this lesser-known feature of Oban which is well-known to the proprietors and their family, who are native to Oban.

Below the ladder, the main waterfront of Oban shows (from left to right) Argyll Mansions and a row of shops, with their windows done in glass bevels.

The scene is loosely reflected in the water of the harbour, shown at high tide.  In the foreground, a design of Scottish thistles has been superimposed.

The panel measured approximately 2 feet by 6 feet (57 cm by 172 cm).  It was mounted within a window recess in the hotel dining room, with a plain glass window behind it.  When the owners who commissioned it sold the Barriemore Hotel, they took the window with them to their new home.

This panel was made for a private home on the Isle of Mull.  The family who commissioned it are keen bird watchers, and wanted to celebrate the successful re-introduction of the White Tailed Eagle  (Haliaeetus albicilla, also known as the Sea Eagle) to the Hebrides following its extinction in 1918.

The panel, entitled "The return of the Sea Eagle", shows the peak Ben Talaidh in the centre, and a freshwater loch in the foreground.  The bird shows the characteristic white head and brilliant white tail of the Sea Eagle.

It is mounted in a transom above an interior door, and measures 30 inches by 18 inches (76 cm by 46 cm).

This window, made for a private home on Mull, celebrates the birth of the family's first grandchild, whose name begins with "A".

A letter "A" can be seen, made from bent reeds in clear glass, on the bottom-left of the picture.  Because the child was born in 2003, the year when Mars was closer to the earth than it had been for many thousands of years (or will be again for many thousands of years), a red crystal to represent Mars is set at the top left.  Below the crescent moon, the evening star is also made from a faceted crystal which creates rainbows in the room when the sun shines through the window.

The window measures 44 inches by 15 inches.

The process of making this panel can be seen by following the link for "Making a Window"
